depending on how simple or easy it would be to recreate, i prefer the recreation over live tracing any day.
if it is a bit complex, i find it worth it in the long run to prepare, though sadly sometimes repair as it sounds like you'll be performing.
I only want to mention this as later on in the life of this file it will be required for many purposes; from something as small as a pencil to something as large as a billboard and larger.
Also, the fact that so many mediums can be used; from etching to printing to vinyl, the smoothest, truest, most efficient beziers from node to node are most practical in the long run.
I remember standing in line, seeing a farmers insurance shirt years ago that was screen printed on the back and had a vinyl cut applique on the front.
The art was obviously sourced from a scan of the logo. The back was of poor quality work as you could plainly see the wandering lines that should have been absolutely straight.
