Just a note.. on Windows 7 you should always do it in the following order:

    1. Install WIndows 7 SP1 (or original Windows 7)
    2. Always use a password for your admin account
    3. When the Security window asks you during installation install RECOMMENDED settings for Defender and Security

    4. DO NOT install anything else until you have done the steps after this one
    5. Run Windows Update and download EVERYTHING security and patches and Service packs and apply it.. Do not go to any other website or download anything from the web.
    6. Restart and all and start IE, run default settings and go to Security Essentials page I gave you above on Microsoft.com and install it.
    7. Run the first scan, update definitions and wait until it's done.
    8. Check all recommended settings if it asks you
    9. Restart and you are done. After that you have no reason to install any other security software or anything. You are well protected.

Naturally, don't visit fishy sites but use Chrome if you have to because plugins and various controls are ran in secure sandbox and it's pretty isolated from your system. Chrome should also warn you if a specific site had malware and Essentials will pop up a window warning you too.

Also, make sure you have Windows Update set on automatic downloads and installs to make sure updating process is as transparent to you as possible but still done.

It's been like 10 years since I had any malware or issues on my computer but it's been especially terrific with Windows 7 and Security Essentials. No worries.
