Viking, your claims that you know better shows how limited your understanding of impact of the media on our thinking is. If people knew better and indeed could make-up their mind then corporations wouldn't pour in billions of dollars into advertising to steer the customers into thinking that their product is better then that of competitors.
It's physically impossible for one person to know it all about everything thus it's important to have "fair and balanced" (by their actions not slogans) media that give the people access to bits of information in relatively unobtrusive way as people will have to make up their mind based on the limited amount of information they have on the subject.
