She's got an interesting strategy: talk first, find obscure facts to cover your incompetence later.
Now, the whole John Wayne/John Wayne Gacy gaff on the surface is minimal. Neither were actually born in Waterloo. John Wayne's parents lived there shortly before he was born (which was the obscure fact the BAchmann campaign used to cover the gaff).
What i wondered is what she was actually referring to. The quote was:
"I want them to know just like John Wayne is from Waterloo Iowa, that's the spirit I have too. It's embracing America. It's sacrificing for America."
This makes me wonder if she's talking about John Wayne or the characters he played in movies. Which prompted me to look up John Wayne, which led me to these two awesome quotes (from a 1971 Playboy magazine interview):
About the plight of the Native Americans
"I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them if that's what you're asking. Our so called stealing of this country was just a question of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves...."and this, regarding race relations: "I believe in white supremacy until blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."

- Makes perfect sense. Those Wayne quotes fall right in line with conservative thinking.severian
