i forgot to mention, usually, the only piece of hardware that can ever be the culprit for any issues resulting in the need to reformat is a corrupt hard drive.
and if that's the case you just need a new one and you can throw your mac vs pc argument out the window as both mac and pcs have hard drives and in are from the same manufacturers ie. toshiba, imb, etc.
