    I remember once I interviewed a chap that came to the interview with furry pointy shoes. That was a shocker.

    My only advise to you is using the interview to find out about the chap itself rather than his skills. You've got a folio and the probation period for that, but remember than more than likely is somebody that you will spend plenty of hours with and if he's a proper twat (OR unhelpful, OR too full of himself, OR... well you know) your work life become slightly more horrid.
