As I kind of said, I think it's an important thing to realise how nasty and without mercy some people can be. I think also that's an important part of realising that given the same circumstances as them, you could do things like that to. It's brutalization, it's what happens when the humanity is stripped out of someone and it's everywhere, in every country, in every age - there used to be heads on spikes outside castles only a few 100 years ago in Western Europe. That's only a few % of human history. When civilisation breaks down, when there aren't villages raising children to become rational, sane, loving human beings then things like this happen. Lots of good things have to all happen in the right order for order and decency to prevail. This kind of evil is the default state that happens if and when kids aren't parented and it only takes one generation.
