so i freelance for a 3d prototype and development firm...
they are working on a cover plate for some electronics on a helicopter, they request the logo, are told that the image sent over was all they had, all. same image from the website. some shit tiny gif.
i have to recreate some font i can't identify and an icon both which were pretty easy. they inform the company they have created the file they'd need and they'd be charged for the time necessary. the place agrees. cool, part goes as planned.
then i'm contacted from said company for a copy of my file for illustrator and a pdf. they offer to pay me for this file and do.
so yeah, i agree though, keep master files people, but how many times do you get to sell an existing logo twice, one of which the company whose logo it is?
