Yeah Macs are unfortunately not as safe as they used to be, just gotta be smart and only type your password in when you really trust the application. In the case of that ^ it's the old trick of the fake virus checker in a web browser that when you click removes downloads a .pkg which installs the malware.
Still need to enter your password though.
As for mac virus software I use ClamXav and iAntivirus to check things I find suspicious. Yet to find anything though
