the lightning "strikes" are from a single strobe light somewhere offscreen at the bottom. if it were real lightning, the tops of the trees would be illuminated also, not just the sides facing the bottom of the viewable area. and it would certainly be bright enough to overwhelm the dim artificial light on the scene - notice how the shadow of the truck is still present during the lightning strikes.
