    it's not their word, don't let his smug elitism fool you. fag is originally meant as slow and drooping c 1520 from there it developed into loose piece. as far as fag/cigarette it wasn't until the late 1880/1890's that it referred to cigarettes and more specifically was originally referring to just the debris that was the smoked butt. it's simply british slang. nothing original.
    which brings us to gay or gai which did originally mean merry/carefree and strangely still does in many english speaking nations, but it is originally french with documented use as early as the 1300's a jaunt 1500 km north of the borrowing brits who came together as great britain or britain in the early 1700's
