Reflections and Stuff is a ubiquitous design style that began in San Fransisco in the late 1990s and flourished internationally over the next decade. The style influenced all areas of design, including architecture and interior design, industrial design, fashion and jewellery, as well as the visual arts such as painting, graphic arts and film. But most notably in web design. The term "shiny table" was first used widely in 2003, after a 16 year old blogger on 'Newstoday' now ‘QBN’ complained that the Apple Computers Website was being ‘totally ripped by everyone’. At its best, Reflections and Stuff represented elegance, glamour, functionality and modernity.
R&S’s shininess was a distinct departure from the sharp neons and dark matte greys of its predecessor style ‘2 Advanced’; it embraced influences from many different styles of the early 20th century, including ‘Sitting things on a glass table’ and ‘Sitting things on a polished concrete floor’. Although many design movements have political or philosophical beginnings or intentions, Reflections and Stuff was purely decorative.
