you could buy a windows machine for about £700 that would be a powerhouse.
off the top of my head -
i5 2500k
8gb ram
120gb SSD system drive
1TB storage drive
+£130 motherboardAlso dont be fooled into buying a mega graphics card. They really dont do anything to cut render times, they only display the image on the screen (obviously buy a gpu that will power several monitors if needed).
Soon though OpenCL will help hardware acceleration. And nvidia's current GPU render software using cuda cores is ok, but not integrated into AE in anyway.
Get nvidia for future proofing GPU rendering though. A GTX 460 768mb is a solid bang for buck choice, it will also play any game (other than crysis and a maybe another) well.
