it really depends on what you are rendering.
multiprocessor only good for processor-intensive tasks, like multiple effects on a composition.
source-footage should come from 1 hd, output should go to a 2nd hd and cache would be writen optimally to a 3rd hd.
if you got lots of ram, you won't need to cache, I gave AE 6Gb out of 9GB. clearing caches and memory before rendering helps sometimes to speed it up.but I'm no expert and I would also love to here more about this.
