It never happens like they promise. Take a fair wage upfront, which could still be lower than what you would prefer, or keep looking. If they're that bad off, what would you do if they closed their doors and stiffed you on payment before you ever got paid your discounted salary? I bet the partners will get paid first and employees second in the final death throws of a boutique. Trust me -- it's happened before to so many people. The company I used to work for closed their doors and it took over a year to get 30% of what they owed me with this super clever form of bankruptcy. It wasn't worth the 3 extra months of work I did for them on good faith (with lots of late and partial payments along the way even for salary employees).

It would be even worse if they asked you to be a contract to hire employee for the first month or so. That's even worse.

Beware, or do work knowing you made the choice to take a huge gamble.
