  4GB is a bit low for AE.

  Things that could help:
  decrease preview resolution (pulldown on the bottom of composition window or from RAM preview window).

  From the composition window you can also select the little lightning icon for other preview options (e.g. wireframes).

  Set preview to skip frames in RAM preview window.
