It's not the girls it's your movie incompatibility. Also age matters, i can't phantom the idea of me liking the kind of movies i liked, say 4 years ago, so if there is a significant age difference that can influence your movie taste. Moreover people change so after a long a fruitful relationship you might want to go one route while her another.
Truth is my woman and me have really similar taste in films: we both can't stand superficial fluff - or rather we are just too old for that. The fact that we both work in film business thus know that much of fimmaking is done to carter to a teenage mind (and often create with teenage understanding of the world...) probably help us to stay away from main-stream filmmaking in generals (though in a way we are both responsible for creation of that mainstream).
