using stock images from other designers could be a useful learning tool...not so good for commercial or portfolio use in my opinion...its kind of a credibility thing...a lot of people look down on using that stuff...make your own images...
some software to know:
photoshop + illustrator (static imagery)
after effects (animation)
flash (animation)
final cut pro (video)
maya (3d)
quicktime pro (exporting stuff)
discreet cleaner / sorenson squeeze (compression, for web)i believe that after effects is the best tool for compositing animation / video / 3d
take a few courses if you can to learn the tools...read some books...observe
the best advice i ever heard about motion graphics is this:
in a good motion piece, every frame is a beautiful compostion
so graphic design skills are pretty important...type, composition, color, etc.
keep in touch with the people you find to be supportive...there are a lot of naysayers (especially here)
its a lot of work...good luck to you
