  hmmmm.....

  my GF is Indian, she's been to Egypt, and a number of other countries... She said in Egypt there was a vibe sometimes of an enourmous amount of repression,where men so rarely seem to be around women other than their sisters/mothers, she was sometimes concerned about being groped in public places....... more so than in India, where her male relatives often stood in a box around her when they all went on busses and certain public places....

  It's not necessarily the economic "undeveloped" thing, as it is the legacy of a long-term gender issues simmering..

  argh, this really sucks...
