Non waterproof trail runners with good cushioning is the way to go. I got these La Sportiva Wildcats a couple weeks ago as my new hikers and so far so good. I find them to be much more comfortable than the Salomons. I've done a 16 mile hike and then last weekend some desert hiking and 3rd class bouldering in JTree - they have great cushioning and the soles are pretty sticky.
As far as boots that are non goretex I can't recommend the Lowa Baffin more. I got the goretex (Tibet Pro) version because I was in a time crunch and I was going to have to order the Baffins. They're a bit heavy but they have great stiffness and they're super comfortable.. they'd last you for a really really long time.
