    ^While i do highly recommend salomon running shoes,
    i had these as a winter (gore tex) running shoe -


    lasted pretty well and very comfy.

    and sit typing in these (well very similar) -

    I would very much discourage using them for walking / trekking. the sole is just too soft and flexible for it.

    You can walk up to something like 15 miles in standard trainers, but you will be much more comfortable in an approach shoe, which have a more sturdy sole and while they don't physically go up around your ankle, the place in while your heel sits is very secure which does offer better ankle support.
