  I was a freshman in High School and one of our science teachers was an alternate for the flight. They gave us the option to ditch class and watch the launch live on the TV in the library so almost the entire school was packed into the library, standing room only, watching on a small 36" tube TV on a rolling media stand.
  When it happen I still remember the look on the science teachers face as he turned and walked out of the room.

  I didn't have the same reaction, as a teenage boy I thought the explosion looked cool not even thinking of the life that was lost.
