    anything that people associate with NYC from the movies will be expensive, thus you should saty away from East Village and such (some great places to hang out there but not to live). THe hoods i would recommend:
    Brooklyn:
    Wiliamsburg
    Greenpoint
    Bushwick

    Queens:
    Astoria
    Long Island City
    Sunnyside

    I'm sure there are plenty of others (but those are the ones i have experience with)
