what I would suggest to you is...
Pick some neighborhoods and live there for 1 year. and move to another. It really helps to understand what you are getting for your money.
I recall living in west village. quite charming. small but livable place. food cost was quite high. there was nothing I could really afford that was decent food.
living east village, you got both high and low but with good food.
I would even try brooklyn but you tend to get stuck there and not really see manhattan.
