I have a Samsung LCD (at least 2 years old) and I hook my MBP up to it all the time. Full 1080 resolution (just scan). The pixels are extremely sharp and it can be used quite effectively as an external display, even for pixel perfect design. The color accuracy is incredibly impressive as well. The "lad" at the Apple store isn't an idiot.
