I think the thing is that it's usually an asshole type of guy, egotistical to the core, yet principled, is the only personality type that would do what he is doing. I htink the libertine sexual attitude comes with the willingness to take a principled stand against authority.
From my reading of history Ben Franklin seem to think rather well of himself and had plenty of dalliances with the fairer sex...one can easily imagine him getting the Assange treatment by the brits if the infrastructure was there at the time as he played among the nobility on the continent...
