I dislike the hostage metaphor because it leaves out the crucial bit of reality - that the hostage takers (Republicans) really have no intent to let the hostages get out alive (let the rich tax cuts expire, or grant long term financial help to anyone but there rich buddies) , and they're telling the negotiator whatever he wants to hear to buy more time to get in a more advantageous position.
So, if I may offer another analogy, one more apt, Obama just burned the village in order to save it.
