I don't know the US economy but
recession + designers with chip on shoulder thread = take that salary and have a job.
Forget contract as a junior - There are people way more faster and adept - either that or if the co. accepts you as contract then they know shit and you'll get bad habits that fuck you up when you want to step up.
Juniors who are money led either progress less or end up hating a decent paid job 3 years later...decide what you want to be doing in 5 years...if 5 k makes a difference now you can forget making big cash and remotely scratching any itches in a few years.
