about your comment, renting is not a big deal. if you go through a estate agent they will want to see a bank account, but that's about it. i reckon you don't need much more, and as said here in britain there's no such thing as id cards. you can use a driver's license or you passport but it's quite unlikely that you'll be asked about it anyway.
try to rent through friends, it's always the cheapest way... or check gumtree (sort of the local craigslists).
Oh, and one recommendation area-wise, shoreditch is cool for hanging out, but don't try to live in there. it can lead you to madness rather quick and it's bloody overpriced!
