Sorry to hear that. The loss of a parent is a very tough thing to go through.
But I do think it is right for you to step forward and design the thing yourself. The things that churches and/or funeral homes supply for this sort of thing are usually dreadful. And it will give it that much more meaning for you. It might be tough to do emotionally, but years from now you'll be proud you did.
But, yeah, simple, clear type treatments, with lots of space and deluxe paper would be good. Maybe even letterpress?
