    Curiously, I suspect he will be remembered as the guy who saved BMW (in spite -or because of- its designs). Even if his designs were polarizing, BMW never sold as much cars as in his tenure.

    But the most important aspect of his work at BMW was this one:
    He managed to pick up a design language with no future (and very ancient, I can recall Paul Braq's designs, Hofmeister's, all of them contributing for the same design theme, from the 60's to the 90's), incapable of being adapted to architectures other than sedans (just remember the awkward 3 series compact, or the fact that every single special BMW departed from that classic language -8 series, Z1, Z3, Z4, Z8, etc.), and provided the brand with a new, recognizable (and blinking and eye to the brand's past) design language that allowed BMW to expand its range to never seen architectures (SUVs, GTs, 1 series, X6, etc..).

    He allowed BMW do sell a lot of cars and expand its range far beyond what would be possible with its classic design theme.
