    WHY do they have to make the border that thick?

    It reeks chunkiness, and show's a lack of that slick design you'd need to compete in this yet to be explored gadget segment.

    Do they want to loose out (more) to the competition? I suppose you need some space for your thumb to not cover the screen, but this is too much. It's shooting yourself in the foot. It's idiocy, since it seems like such an easy fix.
