I do think this is somewhat true in the ad industry. The hottest agencies definitely look for younger designers...they are more inclined to work for (much) less, they are pliable, they are so ambitious that they will gladly put in 80 hour weeks, etc.
Luckily there are so many other things one can do as a designer that are not so soul sucking. :)
