Slideshow pro makes a lot more sense when combined with director. It's an impressive solution, particularly the director interface, which is great and quite slick. A parallel mobile version without flash is now built into SSP.
Limitations:

The CMS (director) is by definition limited to SSP, so it's not usable for any other part of a site.2
If you want to customize (beyond basic rearranging and colour changes) there is a lot of figuring out to do.
