100% right luckyorphan, but the bigger problem is that the responsible, informed voter simply won't vote. The Dodecahedrons of the world (nothing personal, just riffing off the comments above) will reach the conclusion that "there is no difference" between the centrist Democratic party and the extreme right Republican-Teabagger party and sit this one out.
It's a little like 2000, when the Nader voter would tell you that it didn't matter whether Bush or Gore got into office. "How much worse could this Bush guy possibly be..."
