i've been using MT for years and besides the gridserver issues (which are big) i cant complain too much. here's an idea that hasnt been discussed. you may be in a maintenance schedule in which then you may have this issue.
i'd also skip an unsecured ftp and try either ssh ftp (which is a setting in the mt email creation area) or map your web drive.
ftp is pretty insecure and can lead to trouble
