    I liked the idea of "advertising sells, graphic tells"

    But for that soundbite to sit proper you need to be even more clear about advertising.

    Take the graphic of the stop sign, or any other exclamatory sign:
    it strongly advertises it's position by it's bright colors and deviant shape. But it doesn't sell you anything.

    To me, design is intention and advertising an all purpose verb meaning "throwing it out there".

    That probably doesn't help explaining the difference to your client, tho.
