If I were really going to try and explain the difference, I would say:
Advertising is THE communication of a message with the intent to direct the viewer to purchase something, participate, or take part in something. (shit, I actually came up with that before searching google for "what is advertising, Scout's honor!)
Graphic design is A FORM OF communication utilized within advertising to communicate a message with imagery and typography.
