Mostly referred after my first design job at Sony Music. Turned into making the rounds at a lot of experiential design agencies that did movie sites and stuff like that. Then, became a freelancer based off of all the people I met while I was staffing which lead to my next bigger gig.
I basically called cold, got in, and met with an agency I really wanted to, but hadn't done business with. I came to them with a service offering they were not currently selling but had interest in. That lead to me running their online advertising and emerging medias department for 3 years.
That company closed it's doors in December 2009 and sold all remaining assets to a larger agency in another state. I stayed behind with remaining team, got new sales reps, and reformed the same team under a different name.
It wasn't planned to happen at the time that it did, but it naturally came together and I went with it. All the experience made the transition to business owner fairly painless. I'm glad I didn't try doing this until now.
