that hipster fashion cycle relates to something i've been thinking about recently in regards to the whole "be different, be unique" paradigm that's been taught to us since birth.
one of the key principles in evolution is that of mutation... some random change occurs in a lifeform that's tested against the world– if it fails it fails, but if it works then it reproduces and may eventually become the norm.
could "be different, be unique" be the tribal-organism's version of mutation? the hipster fashion cycle isn't restricted only to hipsters, it represents societal memetics in general. hipsters, therefore, are a necessary and inevitable element in society
