I think this may be the case with artists, musicians, etc. - basically people with little to no budgets. I also think this is another example of ignorance in the market where it's our responsibility (or duty) as designers to explain to these people that they still need a personal site and should consider social as another channel. Again, if there's a cost effective way for people to have any type of web presence, they'll opt for the simplest, fastest, cheapest way to achieve that goal.
