Actually it didn't run Flash because there was no Flash plugin that ran well on mobile when it was released. Adobe is now showing that it is possible to run Flash on these kinds of devices, but it's far from easy - and it's taken them another half year since the iPad's release to get it right.
A little fact worth repeating when people keep repeating the idea that Steve Jobs "blocked Flash."
