use primes... they are soooo much easier for video once you're used to them... follow-focus on many zooms is not nearly as smooth or precise, some zooms change focal length a bit when you focus, causing your image to jump a bit when you just want a subtle focus shift effect...
old Nikon AI primes on a $20 EOS adapter are my favorites... such smooth focus, nice contrast, etc..
shooting video on a 5D/7D/T2i with the $99 kit lens is not what it should be....
