ask if they are within a budget, dont give any number.
use words like - "I am looking for a 'Competitive' Salary"
you can hurt your chances at a stronger salary if you give a number.if they insist that you give a number give a range. of $10k-15k difference of what you want and what you will not go below.
but generally ask if they have a set budget and what that budget is. the interviewer may lie and denounce their budget to lower your salary possibilities.. so always give a range.
