Both have different purposes. Macbook Pro if you need a powerful machine and must be mobile. It is an essential tool on set, photo shoots, on the plane and in the hotel the night before the presentation.

My buddy has a Macbook Air here at the office which he uses in meetings and carries around the office from time to time. It's also great for social media stuff and wifi situations like your house or your local city hotspot. I wish I had one actually. Also, it would fit perfectly in your messenger bag if you ride to work daily. Which I do (Buddy said to get a rigid case to protect it from warping over time). It's not a powerhouse by any means, but will do simple stuff like 2D photoshop and layout. But the display is pretty damn small. If you get one, go solid state for sure.

I taught my last AFX class using a 13" Macbook Pro, so the little guys are powerful enough for the big stuff. Get what suits your purpose.

I say 8 core tower at the office, 8 core tower at home along with a 17" Macbook Pro for mobility. Boner.
