If a well dressed friendly guy comes up to you and claims that he's from the tourist bureau or some such thing and writes something on a map and tells you if find a tuk-tuk with a white license plate, he'll take you to some special temples or some shit, don't believe him.

I read about the scam in one of the guide books and didn't really think anything of it, until this guy actually gave us a map and the story... any way, we walked to one of the temples he marked on the map and it was under renovation.

When we were in the south we met two people who had their rooms broken into - while they were in them. Both stayed on Khao San Road so I would not recommend staying there.

As far as safety goes - I walked through some fairly dodgy parts of bangkok and nothing happened - not to say it wasn't a bit scary, seeing the same guy three times as I was walking randomly was a little odd, but nothing happened.

If you don;t have a set itinerary I highly recommend Kanchanaburi - that was by far the best, friendliest, most relaxing place we visited. Just get somce scooters and drive around in the countryside / jungles. Super friendly people and amazing landscapes.
