self, tell him 500 and thats it. only because he knows you are the better designer. i've seen your work and i would gladly pay that much if i knew you could do it and turn it around hella fast.
you pay for cheap, you get cheap. tell him, because it is the first time you will be working with him , you are willing to work around his budget, but can't sacrifice your time and talent too much.
if he agrees, do everything you can to turn it around as fast as possible and get him a top notch product in no time. then he will understand and agree with what you want to charge and why you can do it better than the rest.
