  Giving a bit more thought, I would say the rational is impeccable in a way, and surely the one who came up with the idea was rather clever.

  If we talk about stupid people, they must to be easy to influence, would they? Specially by praising them.

  So, the stupid pays for the overpriced denim and goes home happy, and the clever make shitloads of money.
