Leica does not have built in image stabilization.

It is a basic digital camera. Nothing fancy about it.

With Nikon D700 or Canon 5D MKII, you of course have much better technology in act of shooting but Leica invests more so in their lens.

Two advantage I find (I dont reside size as an issue), lens is much closer to the sensor and more control over how you shoot.

Photo technique wise, Canon is superior. It captures what you couldn't before. Leica does not let you do that. Leica makes you confirm to the equipment and understanding the limitation of the camera it self. Some would argue that this is a negative but I find this to be a positive. It helps me understand cost of frame.

    Not a fair comparison but I did a test against Canon 5D MKII with Sigma 50mm 1.4 vs Canon 5D MKII with Leica R 50mm 2.0 vs Leica M9 50mm 1.4 ASPH.

The images were noticeably sharper in both Leica but Leica M9 gave much better performance. I would think that with Canon's superior sensor, 1D would be a better comparison with 50mm 1.4 or even 1.2 L.

These were shot with Canon 5D MKII with 50mm 1.4
It would be hard to get the same shot with Leica hand handle.
