I dunno, it has been this way for awhile.
When I went to Chicago 6 months ago, I had to show my passport to both the Canadian and the American border crossing, same with when I went to New York last year. On the Chicago trip I watched some guy get sent to the back rooms when he did not have a passport on the US side...
I wouldn't risk travelling without a passport.
Soon not only will you have to travel with your passport, but all permanent residents of Canada will also have to have their PR-Card... I think that becomes manditory as of December 31.
It really is rediculous...
